February Instructions - HMQG Medallion Along

Welcome to the February installment of the 2016 Houston Modern Quilt Guild Medallion Along!

This month, we will be making the first round, which consists of eight blocks, each measuring 3” x 6” finished, and four cornerstones, each finishing at 3” square. The pattern for our blocks is called Goosing Borders, a free pattern available on Craftsy from Jeli Quilts. You can get the free pattern here: http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/other/goosing-borders/106294

To complete the first round of our medallion quilt, you should print out enough paper patterns for eight blocks. The pattern includes one foundation paper piecing template for the geese going clockwise and one for the geese going counter-clockwise. I made four of each! You can choose to make all eight blocks the same if you’d like! Whatever you choose, make this quilt your own!

Once you have your eight blocks completed, sew them together in pairs. You should then have four goosing borders sections each measuring 3 ½” x 12 ½”.

Now for the cornerstones. I chose to use four squares of my background fabric and cut each one 3 ½” square. You might decide to make your cornerstones a contrasting solid, or even to piece some more geese! Whatever you choose, your cornerstones should be 3 ½” unfinished. Sew one cornerstone to each end of two of your goosing borders sections.

Next, sew the two goosing borders sections with no cornerstones to the top and bottom of your center medallion. Then sew the two panels with cornerstones on the remaining two sides. At this point your medallion quilt top should measure 18 ½” square.

Don’t forget bring your medallion to the next meeting for Sew and Tell, so we can see your progress, and tag your pictures on instagram with #hmqgmedallion too.
