Scrappy Happy Houses

I think Jacquie is still looking for more houses for her quilt...

Here you go.. Here is the link... quiltville.com/happyscrappyhouses.shtml

I am asking everyone to make me 1 house from this pattern... NO Setting Triangles... (this block is super easy... beginners can handle it.. No tricks... Advanced Quilters can whip it out in a matter of minutes...

:)

I would like it to look like YOUR house :)

2011 Charity Sewing

We voted to support 2 organizations during the 2011 Guild year... Pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer and Art Quilts for Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI)

Please see these websites for additional information on both organizations:

ConKerr: www.conkerrcancer.org/
They have 2 sets of pillowcase directions on their website. The pattern seems to be the standard size you see most directions list, so I'm sure any pattern will do (APQ 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge website has lots of patterns!) A couple of notes... the fabric needs to be washed prior to making, and all exposed seams need to be finished (zig zag, serge, or French seam).

AAQI: www.alzquilts.org/
Please make sure to read through the information on their website. In addition to the {strict} size restrictions, you can not use someone else's pattern for your quilt without written permission (to be included) from the designer.

For our ongoing project, we elected to make BOTH the 9.5" Wonky Star and the 8.5" String Block. These can be made at any time, with any fabrics... I'll have a box available at each meeting for the blocks. Once we have enough blocks made of either style we'll be on the lookout for volunteers to piece the quilt top, secure backing/batting, quilt & bind. We can also vote at a later date where we want the completed quilts to go... lots of good ideas were shared today, but please also keep in mind any places you hear of that may be in need of a little quilt love.

Here are a couple of tutorials for the blocks:
Wonky Star: thesillyboodilly.blogspot.com/2009/02/wonky-star-tutorial... (we talked of making 9.5" rather than the 12.5" listed in the tutorial)
String Block: www.filminthefridge.com/2009/04/27/a-string-quilt-block-t... (no need for the white center string... just start with your fabrics and go!)

As for timing on the 2 projects, I was thinking we could focus on the pillowcases for the first part of the year so that everyone has time to brainstorm the perfect art quilts! I'll be in touch with both organizations shortly and more specific dates will be shared as determined.

Fat Quarter and Charm Swapping

We had so much fun swapping fat quarters and charms at our last meeting that we want to keep the swaps going!  So, please bring a fat quarter to each meeting if you would like to participate in the swap.  If you are interested in charms, please bring charms to swap in 10 charm increments (I believe they were 3" square).

Habitat Challenge

We've received the fabric from Free Spirit for the Habitat Challenge. Sign up on the flickr thread if you want to participate. We have a limited amount of fabric, so sign ups will only be open until Saturday, July 23. if less than 20 people sign up, you will receive fat eighths of 6 different prints. If more than that sign up, you will get a smaller amount of fabric, but each person will receive the same amount.

Free Spirit has requested that for our challenge we use only solids with the Habitat fabric, to showcase it.

2012 Spring Retreat Options

We've selected 3 retreat locations that appear to meet our group's needs.

Please take some time to review each of these properties. If you've been to any of these, or have friends that have, please share!

We don't know of a date yet, but are probably looking at early next year/Spring (these places fill up fast!)

We will take a vote at the August meeting. If you are not going to be there, please register your vote on the flickr thread, "HMQG Retreat Options".

July 30th Stitched Viewing

July 30th at 2 p.m. there will be a viewing of the movie, "Stitched" at Diedre's house.  Please flickr mail her for her address.

Minutes - July 16, 2011 Meeting

Tammy presented three options for quilt retreat locations to the group. She will be posting the same here on flickr, and we will vote on which location to pursue for a spring retreat at the next meeting (august).

Erin gave a lovely book review. She'll be doing another at the august meeting.

Robin introduced the topic of a meetup during market/festival in the fall for attendees from the various Modern Quilt Guild branches. She indicated she has spoken to the co-founders of the Modern Quilt GUild, and they're excited about a meetup. She is going to contact a few of the hotels within walking distance of the George R> Brown to inquire about availability of space in their lounge/bar and potential cost. She'll report her findings at the next meeting.

Gabi informed us that her friend will be making us two logo options to choose from. When those are ready, we will post them her on flickr so that everyone can vote on which they prefer.

Row Robins - Gabi brought Sabrina's, and Sabrina has taken it out of circulation to finish. Amy brought Deirdre's, and Deirdre has taken it out of circulation to finish.

We had lots of show and tell items. Gina took pics, which she'll post soon.

We had a FQ swap and a charm swap, which we did white elephant or yankee swap style, and everyone had a great time.

Amy conducted a hexie demo for those who hadn't yet learned this fun skill.

We had a couple of guests: Erin's MIL (sorry, but i've forgotten her name), Megan (tammy's daughter), and Robin's grandson Tristan. The two kids were awesomely well-behaved and played together both well and quietly (my favorite traits in children!).
